Nigeria, the largest black concentration and the giant of Africa is presently a beehive of activities from the political arena.
With all intents and purposes, all eyes are on the year 2023, ostensiblly another election year when the people will elect their next president to succeed Muhammadu Buhari.
When the whistle was blown the gladiators of contestants have been emerging from all parts of the country most especially from the two major parties of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposing People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Less than a year before the election more than 40 candidates have presented themselves from the two major parties, and by the end of the day when all interested candidates will be expected to present themselves Nigerians should be expecting the presidential hopefuls in their hundreds.
One thing that cannot be taken away from these contests is that democracy is getting more rooted in Nigeria, and with the calibre of people coming out to grab the first seat in the polity, there is the hope that Nigeria will be better in the future. But this strongly depends on the choice we make from the pot pourri of the contestants.
Among the lots, many have presented themselves for various reasons. Some want to fill their ethnic or religious balance, some are eyeing power to fulfill their life long ambition while some few others are also going there for what they have got to offer.
In the last seven years, we need nobody to tell Nigerians whether they have been better or worse off.
From the hands of the current government and like the immediate one before them, Nigerians have suffered lots of untold hardships – insecurity, infrastructure decay, negligence nurtured by selfishness on the part of the politicians, insecurity, disunity, kidnapping, killing which have reduced Nigeria to an extremely poor nation.
Therefore, there will be lots of expectations from whoever is coming to take over from President Buhari. He must be a man or woman that knows his or her onions. A person that understands the problem of Nigeria, and a man or woman that is ready to face the problems head long with great courage.
As the contenders are bringing themselves up for consideration, the onus is on Nigerians to make their choice and nothing but a perfect one will be able to heal the wounds unleashed on Nigerians by the out going government.
The new leader must be a digital one. The one who understands the modern language of growth and development, the one that believes in the youth and the future of Nigeria, the one who believes Nigeria and Nigerians should proudly rank with their peers in other parts of the world. The new president should be a believer in merit and meritocracy rather than a conservative and biased ethnocrat.
We as Nigerians should bring in somebody who believes that there is the urgent need to repair the broken walls of Nigeria, a unifier and a bridge builder.
Like somebody is asking about from which party to choose from. I will rather say it is not about party representation now. Even though it is important that the winner must emerge through a platform, it is equally important that our choice must come from the party that gives Nigeria its best, and the best in terms of our hopes and expectations.
As Nigerians, we must realise that it is our responsibility to change the naratives about Nigeria which is at cross roads presently and there is the urgent need for somebody who can take Nigeria cross its present Jordan.
We must quickly warn that the politicians should desist from what can further dismember Nigerians, they must refrain from satanic acts like killing and assasination of perceived opponents. Whoever opposes today from within the same political parties can be a very strong supporter of the candidtate that emerge to lift the banners of his or her party.
Like we used to recommend, praying Nigerians should not stop praying. They should pray for the much coveted peace in the land, we must pray for the spirit of abiding love to dwell in the hearts of our politicians, we must pray that the best candidate emerge at the end of the whole exercise, and of course we should not forget to tell God that when it shall be well with Nigeria we will not be found wanting. We must live to eat the fruits of the land.
