The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan-Kukah, has recommended what Nigeria needs to bounce back on its feet, saying they were courage, honesty, truth, humility, trust and firm commitment.
Bishop Kukah in his Christmas message to the nation said President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration had performed below the expectations of Nigerians.
The cleric noted that though the current administration performed well in the provision of infrastructure, it did not meet the nation’s expectations in some other areas, given the high hopes the nation placed on it before it got to office.
The preacher who bared his mind in his 2022 Christmas message titled: Nigeria: Let Us Turn A New Page, and made available to the media by the Director of Social Communications of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Rev. Christopher Omotosho, said politicians make many sweet promises during campaigns but fail to fulfil them after getting to office.
He expressed concern about the prevalence of nepotism in the appointment of important government officials.
“We have paid the price of nepotism entrusting power into the hands of mediocres who operate as a cult and see power purely as an extension of the family heirloom,” he said.
As the 2023 general election approaches, the Cleric urged the political class to make the country work better.
“I plead with you to co-operate and collaborate with institutions which are tasked with the responsibilities for these elections… Do not further fan the embers of hatred and divisions. Seek to create a vision that can unite our country,” he said.
Bishop Kukah said Nigeria has become a tale of two cities with wars between the rich and the poor.
The cleric stressed that “fixing our country and getting it back requires courage, honesty, truth, humility, trust and firm commitment”.
He urged all Nigerians who have been given custody of public trust and commonwealth to rise up to the duties for which they have been so handsomely rewarded.
