It was a deadly Sunday of sorrow and anguish at St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-Luwa, Owo, the birthplace of Ondo State Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu as gunmen entered the Church about the end of the Sunday service and opened guns on the defenceless worshippers and killed them in their numbers.
Reports from victims have it that just about the end of the service when the minister in charge was to say the grace some men were noticed in the Church premises, some were outside while some were inside disguising as worshippers.
Immediately the priest declared the end of the service the satanic elements went forward towards the priest to hold a talk with him.
It was during this moment that a loud deafening noise was heard inside the church, and members began to run helter skelter, as this was going on, some of the men of the underworld inside the Church had opened fired against members found inside the church.
It was at this level that the priest ordered the members to go into hiding. Some hid themselves inside the different corners and rooms including the toilets of the Church.
By the time they came out to see what had happened they were welcomed by a pool of blood of the victims who had fallen in their tens. There was blood on the altar, blood on the floor, bodies on the pews.
Various witness accounts showed that there were lots of dead people, young, old, men and women on the floor of the church.
Efforts were then made to convey the victims to the hospital. The dead were deposited at the local mortuary while the wounded were distributed to the major hospitals like the Federal Medical Centre in the town.
It is still not very clear how many people lost their life, or were injured but it was very clear that a lot of damage had been done, not only to the members of the Church, but also the good people of Ondo State, the Southern part of Nigeria and Nigeria at large.
