The incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki has emerged winner in the Edo State gubernatorial election held on Saturday September 19, 2020.
The results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday afternoon after the results were counted from all LGA’s on Saturday showed the incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party PDP had 307,955 votes, which made him a clear winner over his close competitor of the All Progressives’ Congress, Pastor Ize-Iyamu’s 223,619 votes.
Obaseki, candidate of the PDP, was declared winner of the Edo governorship election Sunday afternoon by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) State Returning Officers, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Petroleum, Effurun , Delta State.
He secured the highest votes in the governorship election which was held on Saturday. The governor won in 13 local government areas while Ize-Iyamu, his closest challenger, won in five.
Total votes cast was 550,242 while the total number of valid votes in the election was 537,407, and rejected votes were 12,835.
After announcing the results from all the local government areas, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Godwin Obaseki winner of the poll.
The winner will officially begin his second term in office in November, 2020.
It was wild jubilation in the state as people took to the streets, singing and dancing in celebration of Governor Obaseki’s victory. Reports have it that residents on the victory side were seen at the Ramat Park, close to INEC headquarters, waiting anxiously for the final results to be announced by INEC, following expectations that the governor would win.
There was also jubilation at Akpakpava Road, Mission Road, Airport road, Siluko Road and other major streets in Benin, the state capital. The celebration continued at the state Government House, as staff of the complex and other supporters sang and danced.
Governor Obaseki in his response took to his Twitter handle to thank the people of Edo State for their votes. He stated,
“Words fail me in saluting our teeming supporters who displayed immense courage in the face of threats, intimidation and brutalization. The collective will of Edo people made it possible for us to triumph over godfatherism. Congratulations to all Edo people. This is our victory!”
Meanwhile, there was wild jubilation in Benin City, capital of Edo State and other major cities of the state as the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Governor Godwin Obaseki winner of the governorship election.
