NEMA Counsels Residents of Flooded Areas, As Lagos flood killed three siblings, four adults

Residents of Aboru and Oke Isagun communities of Agbado Oke Odo LCDA have been advised on how to handle rain and flooding situations anytime they become threatening.

The advice was handed down to the leaders within the community when the Zonal Coordinator of National Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye paid a visit to the victims of the last Saturday torrential rain in Lagos which swept away three children of the same mother in the area.

The NEMA Coordinator told community leaders to go back to their communities to create awareness and educate their members to be wary of how to handle threatening water situations.

He advised that trapped people could mobilise themselves by joining hands together when they want to move out of flooding water of any dimension.

He also advised that residents should always endeavour to move out of flooding areas especially during this raining season.

In a similar development the National Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that the flooding that occurred in Lagos State last weekend claimed seven lives.

The Zonal Coordinator, South West, NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, made the disclosure in a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday.

“The post-emergency phase assessment after the unprecedented rainfall of Friday, July 8 and Saturday, July 9, 2022, has revealed that about seven people – three children of the same parents and four adults – died.

“About eight lives were also saved during the period, as a result of the flooding that was witnessed during the two-day continuous rainfall,” he said.
Farinloye in a statement made available through the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) further stated that the three siblings who lost their lives were residing at a church building belonging to Mercy of Christ Apostolic Church, situated in an uncompleted building.

He disclosed that the siblings, Michael, 18; Elizabeth, 17 and Timi, 14, were swept away while trying to relocate from their room to the main church structure.

According to him the youngest child, Timi, who was said to be asthmatic, while trying to climb the plank linking their room to the church building, slipped and was overpowered by the flood.
The coordinator added that the remaining two while trying to rescue their sibling, were also swept away by the flood.
Farinloye said that the NEMA team, while on a condolence visit to the families, met with representatives of Progressive Community Development Area, and Irepodun Isale Aboru CDA who conducted the agency around the affected communities.

“The bereaved parents were said to be somewhere, but the NEMA team had a brief meeting with the community leaders on the way forward.

“An appeal was made to them that for the rest of the year, the community must embark on awareness and sensitisation on safe actions, to avoid the situation that they experienced during the period.

“The community leaders also informed NEMA that in the same community, four siblings were also swept away on the same day, but that the community members rallied round and rescued all of them,” Farinloye said.

He listed the flooded communities as Oke Isagun, Aboru, Agbado Oke Odo LCDA, all in Alimosho LGA.
Among the community leaders who joined the NEMA Coordinator were Mr. Julius Adegunna, Chairman of Irepodun/Isale Aboru CDA, Chief James Olalekan, the Asoju Oba of Oke Isagun and Mr. Adewole, a former Chairman in Oke Isagun Community.

Adegunna, in his remark appreciated the NEMA Coordinator for finding time to come in person and called on all government agencies and leaders to come to the aide of the affected victims.
According to him, many of the victims lost valuable property and materials to the flood, and many have no food to eat, he therefore called on well meaning Nigerians to help to alleviate the conditions of the affected residents as he also offered prayers to God to comfort the bereaved.
In his own explanation Chief Olalekan told Mr. Farinloye and his team efforts made so far to court the attention of the State government to clear the drainage at least temporarily, saying perhaps if this had been done, the effects would have been minimized.

The NEMA chief said that members of the Progressive CDA briefed NEMA that rainwater from Meiran, Abbatoir, Alagbado, Agege and Tollgate converged in their community.
Farinloye also gave an update on the flood at Oyatoki in Orile Agege, saying that two people died, while four were rescued.
