Nigerians have applauded the governors of Imo and Edo States of Nigeria over their ban on ostentatious ceremonies and the way they make primary education expensive to their pupils and their parents by charging extraneous and avoidable fees.
Both states have banned graduation parties for nursery and primary school students.
It has become a usual practice by proprietors and handlers of private primary schools to hold expensive end of the year parties for their students where parents are made to pay expensively for the end of the year ceremonies.

The bans are aimed at reducing the financial burden on parents and curbing the culture of extravagance associated with such events.
This decision has been met with widespread applause from Nigerians including the federal government owned National Orientation Agency (NOA) noting that these lavish celebrations promote unrealistic expectations and undermine values like hard work and delayed gratification.
In the past week, the government of Imo State, through the Commissioner for Education, placed ban on graduation parties for nursery and junior secondary school students.
Edo State government has also followed suit by officially banning graduation parties for nursery and primary school students, citing the unnecessary financial strain on parents.
Many Nigerians have expressed their support for the bans, praising the governments for taking action to address the financial pressure on parents.
The NOA commended the Imo State government for its decision, highlighting the negative impact of lavish celebrations on young learners. The agency believes these parties promote unrealistic expectations and financial burden on parents.
It is believed that these celebrations undermine values like hard work, humility, and delayed gratification, which are crucial for personal growth and national development.
In their reaction, the consensus among Nigerians, mostly parents and guardians is that the adoption should not be limited to these two states as they call to other states and even federal government to embrace it.
Some Nigerians are calling for other states to follow suit and implement similar bans.
Edo State Government has gone a step further to announce Mandatory Skill Certificate For Junior Secondary Schools and reuse of textbooks by students.
The government in a decisive move to strengthen stability, consistency, and quality learning across all schools in the state, stated that the new education policies would take effect from 2025/2026 academic session.
Under the new policies, younger siblings are henceforth permitted to use approved textbooks previously purchased and used by their older siblings. All approved textbooks will remain in use for a minimum of four years before review by the Ministry.
Graduation ceremonies are strictly reserved for pupils who have completed Basic Education (Primary 1–JSS 3) and Senior Secondary 3 (SSS 3). At these levels, only modest celebrations will be allowed. Expensive parties are prohibited, and pre-basic pupils, Nursery/kindergarten, primary six are not permitted to hold graduation ceremonies or parties henceforth.
The government also introduced Mandatory Entrepreneurship Skills Training for JSS 3 Students, stating the inclusion of new trade subjects in the basic education curriculum, “all JSS 3 students will undergo compulsory entrepreneurship skills training before graduation.”
Starting from the 2025/2026 academic session, every JSS 3 graduate will be issued two certificates: The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), and a Skills Acquisition Certificate in their chosen trade subject.
The Ministry reaffirms its unwavering commitment to producing students who are not only academically sound but also equipped with practical entrepreneurial skills to thrive in today’s world.
